LEARN TENKARA FISHING

Tenkara fishing is a type of simple, rod angling, traditionally practised in Japan used in mountain streams.

Tenkara is a fairly rare method among fresh water anglers.

Unknown outside of Japan until 2009, Tenkara is reel-less and mostly uses live insects and baits as well as artificial flies. Only a Tenkara rod, line & hook is necessary for Tenkara fishing! The appeal to Tenkara is simplicity and minimal weight while pack hunting or fishing!

Tenkara fishing and pack hunting go hand in hand with limited gear weight. Tenkara fishing skills are a technique similar to deer stalking that are both fun and rewarding when mastered.

More often than not areas of good deer hunting have a trout river flowing through it, which is beneficial when carrying a Tenkara rod in your day bag.

Small clear rivers are ideal for Tenkara and sight fishing can be utilised. This is where a fish is sighted and stalked at the trout feeding times of the day, which are from first light until 10am and also from 4pm until twilight. Live bait such as grass hoper or worms can be used, or an artificial fly in the form of a dry fly, which represents live insects on top of the water.

A nymph fly which represents the hatching of or represents dead insects under the water - can be skilfully cast by the angler as natural as possible, as to entice  the fish into striking the hook.

Tenkara rods have no reels. Once the trout is hooked the idea is to play the fish into the net as gently and quick as possible. Depending on the weight of the gear used and size of the fish.

Here are some benefits in using Tenkara when packing into the bush rather than using a spinner or fly.

#1.The Tenkara rod and gear is minimal and light

#2.Tenkara is simple ,practical and effective in catching fish of all sizes.

#3.Fishing this way is both fun and challenging and  there's nothing better than catching a feed of trout to go with the fresh venison after a hunt.

#4. Tenkara has little to no back cast and snags are less likely than fly rod.

#5. Tenkara use smaller hooks on flys and because of this smaller pan size trout do not spook as much as a spinner, which is larger.

#6.Very quickly to set up and stowaway in minimal space.

HOW TO TENKARA
#1 Fish Spotting

When a trout takes the bait such as a nymph fly, the hook should be set with a strike by the angler. The Tenkara rod is then sharply lifted into the air which sets the hook into the mouth of the fish if all goes well. This takes timing and a level of skill to learn.

In clear mountain streams Trout can be spotted feeding at right times of the day. Trout should then be stalked (just like deer) and care not to spook should be taken. Trout have incredible sight and can spook from noise or movement. Best way to do this is stay low and move slow, looking for shape and movement in the water. Here is an example of an active fish.

#2 Rod set up and cast

A Tenkara rod can be pre set up with a leader, trace and fly ready to go. Simply extend the rod and your ready to cast.

Tenkara  can be carried in your day bag when hunting near rivers, so should any fishing opportunities present the rod can be easily cast. Rods are so light and compact ,little to no space is taken up in your bag and weight is simply no issue. When casting allow the fly to drift as natural as possible down stream in front of a feeding fish.Any un natural movement can spook the trout.

Mastering the art of Tenkara is rewarding, fun and very tasty. Tenkara fishing is a challenge well worth learning! Its always best to clean  fresh water fish as soon as you can & wrap up in cloth to keep cool out of the sun or humidity.

#3 Cook over open fire naturally

Nothing beats cooking your catch of trout and or venison over an open camp fire! The best way to do this is using green wattle sticks as shown. When cooked the fish should turn crispy and bend outwards if its done right.Add some salt/pepper and you cant go wrong!
